Reading Comprehension Questions

These are some great questions that you can ask your student after reading with them to make sure that they are understanding what they are reading. The main purpose of reading is always understanding. These questions should fit any story that you read. 

 

Open-ended Prompts

1.        Tell as much as you can about the story you just read.

2.       Did this story remind you of any other story you’ve heard? What story? What made you think about it?

3.      What were you wondering about while you read this story?

4.      Which parts of this story were the most important?

5.      When did you know how the story was going to end?

6.      Who was in this story? Which character was the most important?

7.       What didn’t you understand when you were reading this story?

8.      When you were reading this story, what were you picturing in your head?

9.      How did the author make you interested in the story? Have you had an experience like this one? Tell about it.

10.   Why was this a good story?

11.      What words were hard to read or hard to understand? What did you do to help yourself read and understand them?

12.    What do you understand now that you didn’t understand when you first read the story?
