DOLCH High-Frequency Word Practice and Game Ideas

1. Play games with them, cut the cards out and use them as flash cards.

 

2. Use oral 'cloze' activities with the cards. Hold up the word, and use a sentence with a blank prompting the child to state the word. For instance: " I liked that movie so much that I watched it _________(again).

 

3. Shuffle the Dolch cards, turn them over one at a time and use them in a sentence.

 

4. Write a journal including as many Dolch words as you can!

 

5. Have the child practice the 10 sight words with a hands-on activity like bingo, concentration, Go Fish, etc. The game should be played with a partner (you, a sibling, friend, etc.)
 

6. Its a simple one, but my kids love "bang"...word cards are in a can. the
student picks a card and reads it out loud. If he is correct he can keep
the card, and it is the next student's turn. The object is to have the
most cards at the end of the game. "Bang" is written on some cards. When
a student chooses Bang he has to read BANG in a nice loud voice and put ALL of his cards back in the can.

 

7. For a small group of two students, allow them to play tic tac toe, either with colored chalk on the board or with colored pencils on paper. Or, you could purchase commercially made tic tac toe games with manipulative pieces. Before a student can place an "x" or an "o" on the grid, he or she must spell a sight word correctly.

9. ABC Order-Write your words in alphabetical order

26. Choo-Choo Words-Write the entire list end-to-end as one long word, using different colors of crayon or ink for different words

27. Silly String-With a long length of string, "write" words in cursive, using the string to shape the letters.

28. Back Writing-Using your finger, draw each letter on a partners' back, having the partner say the

word when completed

30. Newspaper Words-Search a newspaper page from top to bottom, circling each letter of a word as you find it
